The 2025 Emmy Awards took place on Sunday night, and as promised, host Nate Bargatze delivered a mostly apolitical show.

That’s no easy feat in such tense times, and there were moments when current events crept into the broadcast, such as when Hacks star Hannah Einbinder lashed out ICE during her acceptance speech.

But the show entirely side-stepped the number one news story of the past week, a decision that left some viewers upset and confused.

Emmys make no mention of Charlie Kirk assassination

As you’ve no doubt heard by now, political commentator Charlie Kirk was shot and killed during a speaking engagement at Utah Valley University last week.

The shooting has become one of the biggest and most divisive incidents of the past year, sparking intense debate across the social media landscape.

Some viewers were surprised by the omission of Kirk’s name from the evening’s ceremony, while others angrily fumed that they expected nothing less.

“The Emmys made ZERO reference to Charlie Kirk who was assassinated,” one X user wrote, adding:

“Instead #Hacks actress Hannah Einbinder after her win: “F**k ICE and Free Palestine. This is the Hollywood left.”

“Charlie Kirk was not mentioned once at the Emmy awards. George Floyd was mentioned numerous times in previous Emmy awards shows. Absolutely disgusting,” another tweeted.

“That #CharlieKirk tribute at the #Emmys was very touching. Very well done. What? You say I got that wrong? Couldn’t be! I mean, these bastions of tolerance, peace, love, and wokeness will do it at some point in the show, right? RIGHT?!?” a third quipped.

Conservative pundit Bethenny Mandel claimed that “more Americans watched or attended vigils for Charlie Kirk than watched the Emmys. By orders of magnitude,” but she did not offer any evidence to support that claim.

Ratings data for last night’s show are not yet available, but roughly seven million people watched the 2024 Emmys.

A memorial service for Kirk was held at the Kennedy Center last night, but as TMZ points out, President Donald Trump surprised supporters by opting not to attend, instead returning to the White House after a day of golf in Bedminster, New Jersey.

A 22-year-old Utah resident named Tyler Robinson has been arrested and charged with Kirk’s murder after allegedly confessing his crime to his father.

Insiders say Robinson is not cooperating with authorities, and his family has not spoken with the media or revealed his possible motives.
