Why isn’t Christian Pulisic playing for the USMNT at the 2025 Concacaf Gold Cup?

Looking ahead, the AC Milan star assured fans that he’s preparing for a strong return. “I’ll be in good shape once this next season starts,” he said. “I’m hungrier than ever. Big things are coming.”

AC Milan forward Christian Pulisic has spoken out in response to the criticism he received for opting out of the upcoming CONCACAF Gold Cup. While many speculated he would remain silent on the issue, the U.S. captain addressed it directly during an appearance on CBS Sports’ Golazo América.

Pulisic had made the decision to skip the tournament well before the U.S. Men’s National Team finalized its roster. He had hoped to participate in the pre-Gold Cup friendlies against Turkey and Switzerland but said the coaching staff declined his request, wanting roster consistency throughout the entire summer camp.

In his comments, the 26-year-old explained the physical and mental toll the last two seasons have taken on him. Between club and international play, Pulisic featured in approximately 120 matches, and heading straight into another summer of competition without rest simply wasn’t sustainable.

I knew how I felt finishing the season, Pulisic said. There were a few small injuries that kept lingering. Jumping right into six weeks of summer play, then straight into preseason with Milan, and from there directly into a new season and the World Cup — it just didn’t make sense. I had to listen to my body.”

While Pulisic’s absence has sparked heated debate among fans and media — especially with the 2026 FIFA World Cup looming on U.S. soil — he made it clear he remains fully committed to the national team. He also expressed frustration over how quickly some fans turn on players.

“People can question my decision — that’s fine — but I just don’t get the negativity and division it brings,” he said. So many fans want to criticize without understanding the situation. We need unity, not this push to turn fans against the team.”

Despite the backlash, Pulisic remains confident in the path he’s chosen and believes the time off will ultimately benefit both himself and the USMNT.

“I’ll be ready when the new season starts, and people will see it,” he added. “I feel more driven than ever. Big things are coming.”
