Turnstile are gearing up to begin their Never Enough tour this Monday (9/15), but first they returned to NPR’s Tiny Desk for some much different versions of the Never Enough songs than the ones you’ll hear on tour.
The last time Turnstile did Tiny Desk, it wasn’t actually filmed at Tiny Desk because of COVID lockdown, and it saw Brendan Yates sitting behind a Rhodes keyboard. This time, they’re at Tiny Desk proper with Brendan front and center, and the band is joined by Troy Long on piano and a horns duo made up of Tobias Moody on sax and Theljon Allen on trumpet. They opened the set with Never Enough‘s horn-fueled “Dreaming,” and then went on to play versions of “Sunshower,” “I Care,” “Never Enough,” and “Birds” that were re-imagined for this eight-piece lineup. “Never Enough” became a gorgeous piano ballad, while they kept “Birds” chaotic enough for Brendan to do what NPR says is Tiny Desk’s first stage dive. (Last year, Soul Glo gave Tiny Desk its reportedly first mosh pit.) “Birds” also had the crowd audibly yelling along, and the whole performance was very cool and well worth watching. Check it out below.
Turnstile’s imminent tour has a stacked lineup, with direct support on one leg from Mannequin Pussy and the other from Amyl & the Sniffers, plus Speed and Jane Remover on all dates. They’ve also got a couple shows with Blood Orange instead providing direct support. There’s no NYC stop but the run with Mannequin Pussy, Speed, and Jane Remover includes other Northeast shows (Philly, Boston) next weekend.
Blood Orange’s Dev Hynes is no stranger to performing on stage with Turnstile, and his just-released album Essex Honey features a collaboration with Brendan Yates. Will they play it at one of those shows? Meanwhile, Speed dropped a new song yesterday. All dates are listed below.
