Rising Vermont singer/songwriter Greg Freeman is gearing up to release his anticipated sophomore album Burnover on August 22 via Transgressive/Canvasback (pre-order), and today we get the third taste of it, “Gallic Shrug.” Like other recent singles, it kinda sounds like a cross between Songs: Ohia and Pavement, and it fits right in with current indie-country stuff like MJ Lenderman, Wednesday, Florry, etc.
About the song and its title, Greg says, “I was trying to look up lists of ‘obscure expressions,’ as in like weird old phrases or proverbs. The first thing that came up was ‘Gallic Shrug,’ a kind of niche physical expression, usually associated with French people–to convey indifference or lack of responsibility. I couldn’t get that image out of my head. Its a very personal song revolving around this very heartbreaking gesture.”
About an “obscure expression” turning into such a personal song, Greg said to BrooklynVegan over email, “I feel like more ‘personal’ songs can sometimes feel a little ungrounded. Like they’re just thoughts and feelings floating around inside of you. I think it’s nice having some more physical imagery to attach those introspective feelings too. It kind of externalizes it in a way that makes it less scary to sing and maybe makes it feel like it’s about more than just yourself.”
We’re premiering the video for “Gallic Shrug,” a mix of footage that was shot on tour and at home using an ear camera that his drummer Scott Maynard got on tour. Check it out below.
Greg is gearing up to open for This Is Lorelei in Queens at the Ruins at Knockdown Center on July 19, and that show also includes Dirt Buyer (whose Joseph Taylor Sutkowski plays live in This is Lorelei) and rapper FearDorian.
After that, Greg will open part of Grandaddy‘s The Sophtware Slump 25th anniversary tour, including the NYC show on October 15 at Brooklyn Steel. Greg also has some upcoming UK dates and an appearance at End of the Road festival. All dates are listed below.
