Green Day frontman Billie Joe Armstrong joined Sex Pistols and Frank Carter at Tons of Rock Festival yesterday (June 26) – watch footage from the performance below.

Green Day were Thursday’s headliners at the Norwegian rock and metal festival, with Frank Carter and Sex Pistols also playing on the same day.

At the end of the latter’s 14-track set, Armstrong joined them on stage for a rendition of ‘Anarchy In The UK’, where he and Carter were arm in arm as they encouraged the crowd to sing along to the chorus.

After the set, Armstrong could be seen holding Sex Pistols’ setlist and speaking to former Gallows frontman Carter.

Fans reacted with happiness and surprise at the collaboration, one writing on X/Twitter: “WHAT DO U MEAN BILLIE JOE SANG WITH THE FUCKING SEX PISTOLS???”. Another joked on Instagram: “This is like the punk rock treaty of Versailles.”

Tons of Rock, which takes place in Oslo, is Norway’s largest rock and metal festival. Also headlining this year were Muse, who took the Wednesday slot, while Kaizers Orchestra and Avenged Sevenfold are still to headline. Also on the bill are the likes of Megadeth, Dream Theater, Weezer, Poppy and Deafheaven.

Meanwhile, Armstrong has spoken before about Sex Pistols’ impact on himself as a musician. He told Rolling Stone in 2022: “Never Mind The Bollocks was one of the first punk records I ever heard. For me, it just had a huge impact. Everything about it, from the lyrics to the guitar sounds to the songs, I thought was just perfect.”

Former Sex Pistol John Lydon, who hasn’t performed with the band since 2008, described Green Day as “turgid” and “embarrassing” in 2018, however.

He’s also not been impressed with Sex Pistols’ reunion shows with Carter, describing their tour as “karaoke” and “almost malicious in its intent” to NME earlier this year. And, he said in April that he’d never join his “woke” old band.

“As far as I am concerned, I am the Pistols, and they’re not,” he added.
