Dua Lipa continued her current tour’s trend of regionally specific covers and surprise guests on Sunday night (10/12) at San Francisco’s Chase Center, where she brought out Bay Area hometown hero Billie Joe Armstrong of Green Day for a seasonally-appropriate rendition of “Wake Me Up When September Ends.”
Introducing the song, she said, “I love this band for so many different reasons. I love it because of the rawness, the authenticity the message behind it, the space that it holds for people who feel like sometimes they might not belong. I loved listening to this album [American Idiot] in particular when I was little. I’d put the CD in the Walkman and just kind of sing my heart out.”
The pair performed the song surrounded by Dua’s live backing band, and they delivered a faithful rendition, as you can check out for yourself below.
The previous night in San Francisco, Dua paid tribute to a different Bay Area hero, Janis Joplin, with a cover of “Piece of My Heart.” She referred to Janis on stage as “an absolute icon, a legend, a woman who’s been such a pillar of the music scene here in San Francisco.” Check that out below too.
Last week, Dua brought out Gwen Stefani in LA for the No Doubt classic “Don’t Speak” (two days before No Doubt announced that they’d be reuniting for a Sphere residency), and she previously brought out Chaka Khan, Nile Rodgers, Lenny Kravitz, Lionel Richie, Leon Bridges, and Mustafa at other stops. She also covered Fleetwood Mac and The Mamas and the Papas in LA, Blondie in NYC, and more.
