“Wasn’t happy with…”: Darren Fletcher pinpoints key concern despite United’s comfortable 3-1 win vs. Wolves

Manchester United Under-18s boss Darren Fletcher has singled out an issue that displeased him despite his side’s win over Wolves.

United secured another victory on Saturday as they cruised to a 3-1 victory against Wolves.

Wonderkid JJ Gabriel continued his red-hot streak as he broke the deadlock with a fantastic strike in the 24th minute of proceedings.

Gabriel made a clever run, which defender Dan Armer located before he smashed the ball home from an extremely tight angle.

The goal marked Gabriel’s 15th of the season. He came close to registering his 16th towards the end of the first half but was denied by the bar.

Noah Ajayi doubled United’s lead moments after Gabriel shed first blood, expertly tucking the ball into the bottom corner after he was played through into the box by Jayirah Shah. Gabriel scored a late penalty to restore United’s two-goal lead after Mason Stevens had grabbed one back for the visitors.

Since he was named as Ruben Amorim’s temporary replacement, Michael Carrick has made a point of watching the youth games and he was present again to see the Under-18s in action vs. Wolves. Carrick was accompanied by his assistant Steve Holland.

In his post-match interview with MUTV, Fletcher didn’t hide his disappointment. He felt his side had grown too comfortable after the break, criticising them for “overindulging” when they should have been ruthless and killed the game off against Wolves.

Fletcher’s verdict

Fletcher said, “We went in at half-time 2-0 up and I was really happy with that. I wasn’t happy with the second half as much.”

“2-0 is a dangerous scoreline, and we overindulged ourselves a little bit, a bit too many mistakes by being sloppy. We let Wolves back in the game.”

The former United midfielder added, “It’s all about development, but when you’ve been in the game a long time, you see these situations coming.”

“You try and warn against it, but they [youngsters] have to experience it to learn.”

“You’ve got to keep doing the right things. At 2-1, anything could have happened. We gave them a glimmer of hope.”

Meanwhile, Carrick and his players return to action on Monday when they face Everton at the Hill Dickinson Stadium. Kick-off is at 8pm.
