Video: Fantastic boost for United Women as star returns to pitch after long injury lay-off

Manchester United Women have coped incredibly well with a significant number of injury problems this season.

Success in spite of injury list

They find themselves heading into the international break in second place in the league and in the final of the League Cup, where they will face Chelsea.

Marc Skinner’s side are also in the quarter-final of the Champions League, where they will face Bayern Munich for a place in the last four.

Nonetheless, with recent injuries to Swedish duo Fridolina Rolfo and Anna Sandberg, as well as Canadian Jayde Riviere, their squad depth is being stretched to the limit.

Ella Toone

One key player that the Red Devils have had to cope without for a long time is star midfielder Ella Toone.

Toone has not played since before Christmas, last appearing in Manchester United’s 3-3 draw with Tottenham Hotspur on 21st December.

She has been limited to 11 starts in the league, scoring three goals and providing five assists this campaign.

Marc Skinner claimed that the player is aiming to be back next month, which would be an incredible boost for the Red Devils.

Commenting on her own injury, Toone told club media that, “it’s difficult [being out]. I hate missing football games. So that’s just annoying. I don’t really like being in the gym rehabbing, but I’m in a good mindset. I know that I can come back bigger and stronger, and I know that I can use this time really wisely to focus on me and get myself feeling in a better place when I come back.”

Great news

The club’s official website has provided a great update on Toone’s fitness, as they reported, “Ella Toone has her boots back on and is running again on the grass at Carrington, as she continues her recovery from a hip injury.”

They also added that, “the United Women midfielder uploaded a video to Instagram on Tuesday, showing her jogging in the training-ground sunshine, cheered on by team-mate Gabby George.”

Skinner will hope that she can perhaps play a part when United return to action on 15th March against Chelsea in the League Cup final.

Toone was actually in the crowd on Monday night as the men’s team secured a vital 1-0 win over Everton in their pursuit of a Champions League place.
