“Unrecognisable” United loanee has brought club to “the brink of crisis”, “radical decision” being considered – report

Trabzonspor are reportedly weighing up a “radical decision” regarding Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana, amidst his poor form in recent weeks.

Declining performances

Onana lost his place in the United team to Altay Bayindir at the start of the 2025/26 Premier League season. Bayindir started the first six games of the campaign and it became increasingly clear that Onana was not in Ruben  Amorim’s long-term plans.

Senne Lammens’ arrival from Royal Antwerp drove the final nail into the coffin of Onana’s time at United. United loaned him out to Trabzonspor.

After a promising start in Turkey, it seemed he had finally put his turbulent two years at Old Trafford behind him. However, his form has nosedived in recent games. The costly errors that plagued his time at United have begun to resurface. He has made 18 Super Lig appearances for Trabzonspor, keeping just four clean sheets.

The Cameroonian has failed to keep a clean sheet in nine of his last 10 games. His display against Fenerbahce last week was particularly concerning. He faced three shots and conceded from all of them as Trabzonspor were defeated at home. There have been calls from the media and a section of supporters for Onana to be dropped and now, an update has emerged on his situation.

Onana update

According to Kuzey Ekspres, an outlet local to Trabzonspor, Onana is “at the centre of controversy” following his poor showing against Fenerbahce.

It’s said that his performances have brought the club to “the brink of crisis”, prompting head coach Fatih Tekke to hold a private meeting with the shot-stopper, where he demanded that he “get his act together.”

The report notes that Trabzonspor are considering making a “radical decision” on Onana, who has become “unrecognisable” in recent weeks.

Kuzey Ekspres write, “It has been learned that in a private meeting at the training facilities, Tekke demanded that Onana urgently recover both mentally and physically.”

“While Fatih Tekke is trying to boost the player’s morale, it’s reported that if his performance continues in this manner, he’s open to the idea of ​​handing over the goalkeeping duties to the reserve goalkeeper.”

Trabzonspor President Ertuğrul Doğan admitted that Onana’s high wages make the likelihood of a permanent stay almost impossible. As the days go by, the chances of him returning to United are growing stronger. His poor form certainly isn’t helping the situation.

Takvim give their own view, saying that Onana is being supported by Tekke and his teammates.

It’s alleged that Tekke said to Onana in their meeting, “We trust you. You are one of the leading players in this team. Everyone goes through unlucky periods. You are one of the best in Europe.”
