United tried to offload mystery player to Ligue 1 heavyweight after failed double deal – report

Manchester United are yet to do any business with OGC Nice since INEOS takeover at Old Trafford.

Last summer, United tried to sign Jean-Clair Todibo from the Ligue 1 outfit, but the deal collapsed due to UEFA rules, handing West Ham United the opportunity to sign the French defender.

Recently, Nice’s sporting director, Florian Maurice suggested they wanted to do business with United this summer.

“I spoke with Manchester United during the transfer window in order to try and find solutions. We envisaged things, like asking them to sign a player and then loaning us back, but their priority was to sell,” said Maurice.

Nice wanted Man United duo

According to Ici Azur (via GFFN), Nice wanted to sign Rasmus Hojlund and Kobbie Mainoo on loan.

However, Hojlund ultimately joined Napoli on loan and Mainoo’s request to depart Old Trafford was turned down by the club’s hierarchy.

It is claimed United offered a different youth player, but Nice decided not to move ahead, as the unnamed player was deemed not ready to play for the club.

Accordingly, United and Nice failed to make the most of multi-club ownership despite UEFA lifting the ban on transfers between the two clubs.

Hojlund scores on Napoli debut

Meanwhile, Hojlund has had a positive start to life in Naples, scoring a goal on his debut for Napoli in Serie A.

It is believed the Italian giants are obligated to buy the Denmark international next summer if they secure Champions League football.

Mainoo’s situation under Amorim remains concerning. The dynamic midfielder wanted to leave the club on a temporary basis in search of regular starts but United kept him against his will.

Despite the absence of Mason Mount and Matheus Cunha against Manchester City, Amorim started Bruno Fernandes in midfield, leaving Mainoo on the bench yet again.
