United star in “advanced talks” with the club over new role just weeks after confirmation of his exit – report

Jonny Evans is reportedly set to stay at Manchester United in a staff role following the expiry of his contract at the end of the month.

Evans retired from professional football last month, shortly after the club announced he will be leaving.

He enjoyed a trophy-filled career at Old Trafford over two spells, making 241 appearances and winning 12 major honours.

He last featured for United in the 3-1 comeback victory against Hong Kong, the final fixture of the club’s post-season tour.

Evans had recently admitted he was unsure about what the future held, saying he would take his time to ensure he didn’t rush into any decisions.

Now, The Athletic have revealed that the former Northern Ireland international is in “advanced talks” with United over a staff role that will lean into his knowledge of youth development.

According to Laurie Whitwell, “United want to retain Evans at the club after he called time on his playing career and an agreement is in place for him to look after loans of emerging talents.”

“His football experience is seen as vital to keep at United, where he won three Premier League titles, two League Cups, a Champions League and a Club World Cup in his first spell. He rose through the ranks at United having first attended the club’s centre of excellence in Belfast aged nine, making his debut in September 2007 under Sir Alex Ferguson.”

“United see Evans as a valuable asset for his character, professionalism and experience of winning trophies, and feel a role in bridging the pathway between academy and senior football suits him.”

Whitwell notes that after returning, Evans often shared insights with younger players about the club’s heritage and the pride that comes with wearing the United shirt.

The 37-year-old will effectively replace Les Parry, who vacated his position as United’s loans manager to join Saudi outfit Neom SC in a similar capacity.

Evans will not only help identify suitable clubs for United’s young talents but also keep track of their development and provide guidance whenever necessary.

Evans was a loyal servant to United throughout his playing career and the fact that he’s choosing to continue supporting the club even in retirement says a great deal about his character and the love he has for the Red Devils.
