Harry Maguire’s redemption arc at Manchester United has been quite extraordinary. The English defender arrived in 2019 from Leicester City with the label of the costliest defender in history, which soon became a burden.
After an impressive time under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, Maguire fell into troubled waters following former manager Erik ten Hag’s arrival.
The Englishman was stripped of the captaincy by the Dutchman, but dug in, wrestled his way back into the team, and ultimately proved his naysayers wrong.
According to TEAMtalk, United have already made a decision on his future beyond next June, when his current deal expires.
Amorim considers Maguire a key part of his plans
Despite losing the armband to Bruno Fernandes, Maguire remains a key presence in United’s backroom. He is also part of Ruben Amorim’s leadership group at Old Trafford, and the Portuguese head coach is apparently a huge admirer of the player.
The 32 year old has appeared 34 times under Amorim so far, even chipping in with four goals and an assist.
Matthijs de Ligt looks the preferred option for the central role in Amorim’s back three at the moment. While the Dutchman has started all of the three Premier League games this season, Maguire’s experience and expertise will be vital in a long and testing season.
The Red Devils are pleased with his efforts so far and are now ready to extend his stay at Old Trafford. Amorim apparently wants Maguire at the club as he aims to turn United’s fortunes around.
That is an incredible turnaround for a player who was close to leaving in 2023.
Maguire wants to stay at the Theatre of Dreams
Despite not being a guaranteed starter under Amorim, Maguire reportedly wants to continue his association with United. The Englishman apparently turned down Juventus and Como this summer, and believes that he still has a lot to offer to the team.
The former Leicester City man is also flexible about the terms of a new deal, which further highlights his desire to stay with the English giants.
Maguire has registered three appearances across competitions this season for United. His only start, though, was against Grimsby Town in the EFL Cup Second Round defeat, where he found the back of the net as well.
