United legend tipped to replace Amorim leads the race to become Rangers manager – Sky Sports

Manchester United legend Michael Carrick is expected to embark on an exciting new phase in his career.

Since hanging up his boots, Carrick has fashioned a managerial career for himself, remaining invested in football despite no longer taking to the pitch.

Having been part of the coaching staff of then-Man United manager Jose Mourinho, Carrick became the caretaker manager of his former club before Ole Gunnar Solskjaer took the helm. Solskjaer then decided to recruit Carrick as part of his own coaching staff, having been impressed by the retired midfielder.

Following Carrick’s respectable three-year stint as manager at Middlesbrough, it seemed as if he could return to Old Trafford, particularly as Ruben Amorim’s future seemed in doubt.

Links to United job

In late September, The Peoples Person noted that Carrick has been reportedly “tempted by a return” to United to take over as Amorim’s replacement.

In turn, fans could have been receptive to Carrick’s return. While the former England international last managed United for three games following Solskjaer’s departure, the team remained undefeated, even picking up wins against Villareal in the Champions League and Arsenal.

Sadly for Carrick fans, it appears as if he will not become United’s next manager, at least not over the near term.

After all, Sir Jim Ratcliffe claimed that Amorim would need to prove himself as manager over three seasons, indicating that there are no plans in place to dismiss the Portuguese manager from his role.

What’s more, it seems that Carrick is in line for a new role.

The race to the Rangers’ job

Scottish giants Rangers are on the hunt for a new manager to take over from Russell Martin.

It seems that Carrick may be leading the race.

“A former Manchester United midfielder has emerged as a shock contender to take over at Rangers after Steven Gerrard snubbed a return to his former side. Gerrard, 45, who won the Premiership title for the Glasgow giants in 2021 before leaving for Aston Villa, held talks in London over replacing Russell Martin over the course of Thursday and Friday,” the Daily Mail reported.

“However, with Daily Mail Sport having reported that he was eager to be given control over transfers should he go back to Rangers, it has emerged that Gerrard has now told chairman Andrew Cavenagh and vice-chair Paraag Marathe that he wishes to step away from the race.”

The report continued: “Rangers, though, are still eager to settle on their new boss during the international break and ahead of the home league game with Dundee United next weekend. Ex-United man Michael Carrick, who was most recently in charge of Middlesbrough, could end up on the hotseat.”

“Having also spent time in charge of United as a caretaker boss, Carrick is keen to continue his coaching career and could be provided to do just that in Scotland with Rangers following the toxic departure of Martin,” the article continued.

Sky Sports Scotland confirmed this, mentioning Carrick as a potential candidate for the job in a video on X.

While it seems that there is little chance of Carrick becoming United’s next manager, at least in the foreseeable future, perhaps Amorim will be able to right the ship over time.
