United legend believes outstanding 23-yo has “everything” to be a success at Old Trafford

Manchester United’s decision to sign Senne Lammens from Royal Antwerp last summer has already turned out to be a masterstroke. The Red Devils were in the market for a new goalkeeper last year following the struggles of Andre Onana.

The Cameroonian custodian, who was signed from Inter Milan in the summer of 2023, turned out to be a huge disappointment in his two seasons at Old Trafford. Onana lost his place to Altay Bayindir at the start of this season, but the Turkish goalkeeper was hardly an improvement.

The situation prompted the Premier League giants to take decisive steps before the end of last summer’s transfer window. United were heavily linked with a move for Aston Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez, who matched their Premier League-centric transfer policy.

However, the Red Devils surprised everyone by opting for the unproven Lammens instead, and are now reaping the rewards of their decision.

A calming presence between the sticks

Lammens joined United on transfer deadline day, but former United head coach Ruben Amorim resisted the temptation to throw him directly into action. Instead, the Belgian was afforded time to acclimatise to the rigours of the Premier League, watching from the bench for three games before he was handed his debut against Sunderland in October last year.

Lammens made a superb first impression, helping the Red Devils register their first clean sheet of the season, and has played every minute of every game since. The 23 year old has looked unfazed by the physicality of the English league, and his dominance in set pieces has also been a refreshing departure from his predecessors.

Lammens has registered four clean sheets from 21 games in all competitions for the Premier League giants this season, conceding 28 goals.

Lammens recently revealed that he resonates with former United goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar. The legendary Dutchman has now spoken about the Belgian’s time at Old Trafford so far.

Adapting admirably to the Premier League

Speaking on The Overlap, Van der Sar was full of praise for Lammens. He said: “He’s doing well. He’s responding well to the physical demands of the Premier League.”

“I see him coming to collect the ball at the penalty spot, he shows confidence, makes saves when necessary, without trying to make unnecessary saves. I’m not here every day and I don’t see every game, but he seems to have everything it takes to stay here for a long time.”

Speaking recently to United’s website, the Belgian revealed that his calmness is one of his biggest qualities. The player’s presence between the sticks has certainly brought stability to the Red Devils’ backline, especially in the last five games, where they have registered two clean sheets.

Final Thoughts

Lammens has all the makings of an Old Trafford great and fans will hope he could one day emulate Van der Sar’s achievements at the Theatre of Dreams. The Dutchman’s world record of 1,311 Premier League minutes without conceding a goal, set in the 2008/09 season with United, remains unmatched to this day.
