“This is where…” Rio Ferdinand explains United’s plan for Leny Yoro after Crystal Palace incident

Leny Yoro endured a tough start to Manchester United’s game against Crystal Palace on Sunday, 1 March, at Old Trafford. In the fourth minute, the young defender allowed Palace’s Maxence Lacroix space to put a free header into the back of the net.

It was a rare lapse of concentration from Yoro, who had been solid against Everton in the previous game. The Frenchman was drafted into the team against the Toffees after Lisandro Martinez picked up an unfortunate injury.

Yoro partnered Harry Maguire at the heart of the Red Devils’ backline and helped secure a narrow 1-0 win at the Hill Dickinson Stadium. With Martinez failing to recover, caretaker manager Michael Carrick opted to continue with the duo this weekend.

The 20 year old, however, had a horrible start to the game, which put his team on the back foot. Thankfully, United recovered from the initial hiccup, with goals from Bruno Fernandes and Benjamin Sesko securing a 2-1 win. Yoro, meanwhile, did not put another foot wrong for the remainder of the game.

Yoro’s season so far

United hijacked Yoro from right under Real Madrid’s noses in the summer of 2024, and the young defender has developed in leaps and bounds so far. This season, he has registered 26 appearances in all competitions, 15 of which were starts.

Leny Yoro Stats: 2025/26 Season

FA Cup 1 1 90′
Total 26 26 1 1,435′

Yoro was a regular feature under former head coach Ruben Amorim, when he was deployed in a back three. Since the Portuguese’s departure, however, the Frenchman has struggled for game time, with Carrick reverting to a back four.

With Maguire and Martinez forging a rock-solid partnership under the Englishman, Yoro registered just 22 minutes of football until the Argentine was injured. The situation has added to speculation regarding his future, with reports surfacing last month that suggested Real Madrid are ready to return for the young defender.

However, Yoro is highly rated at Old Trafford and United are unlikely to consider his departure. It now appears that Carrick’s coaching staff are already planning to work with the Frenchman to address the recent error.

United planning corrective measures

Speaking on his YouTube channel, United legend Rio Ferdinand revealed that the Red Devils are looking to assess Yoro’s error and help him nip the issue in the bud. He said: “The thing for me that I’m hearing now is that they will be going over that goal.”

“That goal will be dissected by Jonathan Woodgate and Jonny Evans. This is where you went wrong; this is how you prevent it from happening next time. That’s an important factor I’m hearing coming out of the current regime.”

The young Frenchman is not the finished article yet, so help from experienced campaigners like Woodgate and Evans can certainly help him smooth out his rough edges.

Final Thoughts

With Maguire’s contract due to expire this summer and Martinez and Matthijs de Ligt struggling with injuries this season, Yoro remains a vital piece of the puzzle for United. The fact that the Frenchman is still very young and could get even better highlights why the Red Devils broke the bank for his signature two years ago.
