Reddit users have weighed in on the best possible date night movies, with some recommending surprising entries.
A recent post on the movies subreddit asked for recommendations for “something that hits the sweet spot” – more specifically “interesting enough to show I have great taste, but chill enough that it won’t be awkward if we get distracted halfway through”.
“Nothing too intense or super emotional,” they added. “Think cool, vibey, maybe a little flirty. Something that says ‘I’m fun and effortlessly hot’ without me having to say it.”
One of the top recommendations was 2020’s Palm Springs, which one user suggested has a “bit of funny risqué content along with the standard rom com pleasantries”.
The comedy stars Andy Samberg and Cristin Milioti as two strangers at a wedding who are stuck in a time loop, and drew huge acclaim.
Another popular choice was the 1999 remake of The Thomas Crown Affair starring Pierce Brosnan and Rene Russo, one fan suggesting the chemistry between the leads “is what makes it a great date movie”.
The Mummy was also one fans can “never go wrong” with, one person noting: “You’ve got Rachel Weisz and Brendan Fraser so something there for everyone no matter the gender or orientation.”
A more left-field choice, though not unpopular with 2.5K upvotes, was The Lord Of The Rings trilogy’s Extended Editions – though a user joked that the length will mean daters “start as strangers and end the trilogy with 2 kids, 3rd on the way, and marriage counseling”.
Further surprising suggestions included Shrek and Tremors, while other popular choices were Baby Driver, Pirates Of The Caribbean and Clue. However, one post understandably warned against watching 2006 dystopian thriller Children Of Men.
In NME‘s four-star review of Palm Springs, we said: “Like a lot of great recent romcoms, Palm Springs struggles a little with how to channel its bittersweet ambivalence and sharp sense of humour into a next-level ending. The movie comes out of the gate with a speed and charm that’s difficult to match. It’s fittingly self-reflexive, though, that the movie’s only real letdown comes after looping through so much fun.”
