‘The Witcher’ author shades George R.R. Martin for not writing new ‘Game Of Thrones’ books

George R. R. Martin

The author of The Witcher series of books has made a playful dig at George R. R. Martin not finishing his A Song Of Ice And Fire book series.

Martin’s book series would be adapted by HBO into the show Game Of Thrones. The TV adaptation ran for eight seasons, covering the first five books, and then creating its own conclusion as the final two books in Martin’s series are yet to be published.

The author has addressed the delay many times, acknowledging the frustration of fans and describing the final stories as “the curse of my life”. Andrzej Sapkowski, famous for writing The Witcher series of books which would be adapted into successful video games and a Netflix series, recently discussed the idea of writing more instalments, making a joke at the expense of his fellow author.

“If anyone in the audience asks that kind of question, I’ll tell you right now: I will write something else. Relax. No need to fear,” he assured fans at the Opole book festival in Poland (via Redanian Intelligence). “And unlike George R. R. Martin, whom, by the way, I know personally, when I say I’ll write something, I will“.

He would later offer some sympathy for Martin, saying that he disagreed with HBO’s decision to finish the series before the books were complete.

“Listen, just between us I totally understand him” he explained. “Because if someone had pulled a stunt like that on me, filming a series based on my books, and then getting ahead of what I intended to write, I’d also be wondering whether there’s any point in writing anymore. If it’s already been done, right? Makes no sense. It’s nice when they adapt your work, that’s the author’s bloody right, but to adapt what doesn’t exist yet, to extrapolate like that? That’s just indecent“.

George R. R. Martin recently spoke about his dislike of TV writers adapting his work, arguing that “often they do not improve it”. He is also working on a film adaptation of the game Elden Ring, which he promises “won’t suck”.
