The Boys star Erin Moriarty has been diagnosed with Graves’ Disease – see what the actor had to say about her condition below.
Last week (June 13), Moriarty took to Instagram to share that she had been diagnosed with Graves’ Disease for which she is currently ongoing treatment and has been “increasing in strength ever since.”
Moriarty wrote: “Autoimmune disease manifests differently in everybody/every body. Your experience will be different from mine. My experience will be different from yours. Perhaps greatly, perhaps minutely. One thing I can say: if I hadn’t chalked it all up to stress and fatigue, I would’ve caught this sooner.”
“A month ago, I was diagnosed with Graves’ disease,” she continued. “Within 24 hours of beginning treatment, I felt the light coming back on. It’s been increasing in strength ever since. If yours is dimming, even slightly, go get checked. Don’t ‘suck it up’ and transcend suffering; you deserve to be comfy. Shit’s hard enough as is.”
Elsewhere in the post, she also included screenshots of text messages with her parents, in which she detailed her woes. She wrote in one text to her mother: “I really really need relief. I feel nauseated tonight. I feel so shit and removed from who I am, I can’t live like this forever. Or that long. There aren’t moments anymore, not even a passing 5 seconds, when I feel normal. I’ve never had that. Not one. It’s not just fatigue – it’s an ineffable, system wide cry for help and I don’t know how long I can remain in this state.”
In another chat with her father, presumably after receiving treatment, she wrote: “I already feel a world of difference, primary thought (as of now): ‘damn, this is how I’m supposed to feel? I’ve been missing out!’”
Graves’ Disease is described per the Mayo Clinic as “an immune system condition that affects the thyroid gland. It causes the body to make too much thyroid hormone.” Symptoms of Graves’ Disease include tremors, sensitivity to heat, weight loss, skin discolouration, irregular heartbeat and fatigue.
Erin Moriarty is best known for playing the role of Annie January/Starlight in the hit Amazon series The Boys across four seasons, and is set to reprise her role for the upcoming fifth and final season.
Besides The Boys, Moriarty has also starred in shows like True Detective, Jessica Jones, and most recently cameo-ed as herself in an episode of The Studio starring Seth Rogen.
In a four-star review of The Boys season four, Ali Shutler wrote for NME: “With season five already confirmed, the return of a few familiar faces and a lot of characters confronting their pasts, this season sometimes feels like the set up for an eventual endgame scenario. Fans will note that spin-off show Gen V recently introduced a potentially supe-killing biological weapon. Luckily, all that plot never slows down the pace in what is another urgent edition of TV’s best superhero show.”
