The Beths announce new album, share “No Joy” video

New Zealand’s The Beths have announced a new album, Straight Line Was a Lie, which will be out August 29 via ANTI-. It’s their first for the label and was produced by the band’s Jonathan Pierce.  “Linear progression is an illusion,” Elizabeth Stokes says of the album’s title. “What life really is is maintenance. But you can find meaning in the maintenance.”

The album includes recent single “Metal,” and they’ve just released “No Joy,” which is the kind of buzzy earworm, sounding happy while dealing with some heavy stuff, that The Beths are so good at. “It’s about anhedonia, which, paradoxically, was there both in the worst parts of depression, and then also when I was feeling pretty numb on my SSRI,” Stokes says. “It wasn’t that I was sad, I was feeling pretty good. It was just that I didn’t like the things that I liked. I wasn’t getting joy from them. It’s very literal.” Watch the video below.

The Beths will be on tour this fall, with Phoebe Rings, Flight of the ConchordsBret McKenzie, Illuminati Hotties, and Squirrel Flower opening along the way.  The NYC show is at Brooklyn Paramount on December 5 with Phoebe Rings and Illuminati Hotties opening. All dates are below.
