Despite a name that sounds like a 1981 hardcore band (or a ’90s grunge supergroup), Malmö, Sweden’s Hater make textured, atmospheric, and melodic indie rock that would’ve fit right in in the late ’90s or early ’00s. The band have just announced Mosquito, their first album in four years, which will be out March 6 via Fire.
The first single from the album is “This Guy?,” which starts with a driving bassline that could’ve gone arera riff rock but insteads blossoms into the kind of melancholy dreampop you might associate with early Mew. The band’s Måns Leonartsson calls it “a quite confusing song,” adding, “I love the fact that the verse is complete weirdness, and the chorus is clear as day.”
