Britpop fans had a real quandary on Thursday as two of the best bands of the ’90s, Pulp and Supergrass, were playing big shows in different venues nowhere near each other. Who allowed this to happen? For those who chose Supergrass at the Rooftop at Pier 17, they got the group performing their fantastic debut album, I Should Coco, in full for its 30th anniversary.
While they played every song off I Should Coco, which came in at #2 on our list of the Best Britpop Albums of 1995, they didn’t play it in order and sprinkled in other favorites from their other albums, making for a great setlist. That included Coco classics “Alright,” “Caught by the Fuzz,” “Mansize Rooster” and “Strange Ones,” plus “Late in the Day,” “Richard III,” “Lenny,” “Moving,” and more. They closed out the main set, fittingly, with “Time to Go” (which is the last song on I Should Coco) before returning to play “Sun Hits the Sky” and “Pumping On Your Stereo” in the encore.
Newer UK band Sports Team opened the show and photos by Ryan Muir (for The Rooftop at Pier 17) are in this post. Check those out, along with the setlist and fan-shot video from the show, below.
