Speed return with powerful new song “Peace” ahead of tour with Turnstile

Speed have risen up as not just one of the biggest Australian hardcore bands on a global scale, but as one of the biggest hardcore bands in general, and they’re keeping the momentum going with a new three-song EP, All My Angels, on October 23 via Flatspot/Last Ride (pre-order). Speed recently told us that the EP bridges the gap between last year’s excellent debut album Only One Mode and their in-the-works sophomore album, and vocalist Jem Siow said, “We’re just trying to see if we can unlock a little more identity in our sound.”

Guitarist Josh Clayton added, “It’s hard to do as a hardcore band. There’s very firm boundaries on what you can kinda do as a band. We’re not necessarily looking to challenge the boundaries at all, but I think we’re just trying to challenge the kind of style that we’ve created for ourselves.”

With lead single “Peace,” you can already hear Speed inching towards something with even more range than Only One Mode had. It sounds distinctly like Speed, and it’s one of the band’s most instantly-satisfying songs yet. It’s full of memorable riffs and refrains that never come at the expense of ass-kicking aggression, and it has those brief little genre-blurring moments sprinkled in even more seamlessly than they were on Only One Mode. The subject matter is powerful as well, as Jem explains:

Three of our close friends passed away in 18 months – but, amidst this devastation I was overcome with a deep sense of clarity and peace. Because, despite the abyss of questions of why and how, my clearest sense of calm lay in the certainty that the time we shared and invested in one another was underpinned by unfiltered honesty and unconditional love. Their lives were short, but I know our experiences together were lived with deep, meaningful intention, which has in turn empowered us with more meaning and purpose while we are still here. This sense of calm and focus exists like a sharpened, refined weapon at my disposal – poised to attack life and its many hurdles with precision and intention. And it has only been refined through the process of loss.

Speed are also about to begin a tour supporting Turnstile that also includes Jane Remover on all dates, plus varying dates with Mannequin Pussy, Amyl & the Sniffers, and Blood Orange. No NYC stops on that tour, but the run with Mannequin Pussy will be in the Northeast for stops in Boston and Philly. After the tour ends, Speed return to the area to play a headlining show at Brooklyn roller rink Xanadu on October 25 with another great lineup: End It and MSPAINT. All dates are listed below.

During our recent interview with the band, Speed guitarist Josh Clayton also named his 5 favorite hardcore albums.
