Signed, sealed… not yet delivered? What’s delaying Christian Pulisic’s Milan extension

Once considered a formality, the American star’s contract extension now hangs in the balance.

As the dust settles on a turbulent season for Milan, Christian Pulisic’s future remains unresolved, despite months of negotiations and mutual admiration. Once considered a formality, the American star’s contract extension now hangs in the balance, with the player himself reportedly putting the brakes on the deal. The question being asked across Milan and beyond is simple: what is happening with Pulisic’s renewal?

The 26-year-old enjoyed arguably the best campaign of his club career during the 2024-25 season. Scoring 17 goals across all competitions, he emerged not just as Milan’s most consistent attacker, but as a central figure in a squad that otherwise struggled for direction. Amid poor team results—an eighth-place Serie A finish, no European qualification, and an early Champions League exit—Pulisic shone as a rare positive.

In light of these performances, reports began surfacing midway through the season that a contract extension had been agreed in principle, including a pay rise and an additional 12 months on top of his current deal. The renewal was seen as a way to reward the 26-year-old’s impact and lock in one of Milan’s most valuable assets ahead of the 2026 World Cup.

Why Pulisic hit pause on the new deal

However, no official announcement ever came. And now, according to trusted Italian journalist Matteo Moretto, we know why. It wasn’t the club dragging their feet—it was Pulisic. “For months Pulisic could have signed the renewal, because everything was ready… they had discussed practically all the details of the contract but the boy took his time and asked for technical guarantees,” Moretto revealed on X (formerly Twitter).

The American star reportedly asked for assurances regarding the direction of the club, particularly after a disappointing campaign that has left the Rossoneri out of Europe and in need of major restructuring. Rather than blindly committing his future, he wanted a clearer picture of the technical project—in other words, who the new coach would be, what signings were planned, and how Milan intended to compete again at the highest level.

What Happens Next?

While Milan’s leadership is working to restructure the club—bringing in Igli Tare as sporting director and Massimiliano Allegri as the new manager—Pulisic remains in a holding pattern. There is growing belief that a clarification meeting may soon be held between the club’s hierarchy and the player, possibly resolving the impasse and leading to a formal renewal.

Meanwhile, the player has opted out of this summer’s Gold Cup with the USMNT, drawing some criticism back home. But the decision was strategic: Pulisic wants to be fully rested and mentally prepared for the 2025-26 season—ideally one where he plays a leading role in a revamped Milan side.

For now, there’s no indication that the forward is actively looking to leave. His agent has reportedly fielded interest from other clubs, including some in Serie A, but this seems more precautionary than a sign of discontent. He is said to be happy in Milan, appreciative of the fans, the environment, and the opportunity to continue developing his game in Italy.
