Scarlett Johansson becomes Hollywood’s most bankable lead actor with ‘Jurassic World Rebirth’ hit

Scarlett Johansson has become Hollywood’s most bankable lead actor following the success of Jurassic World Rebirth.

The star appears in the latest instalment of the Jurassic franchise – released in cinemas last week – taking on the role of a covert-ops specialist called Zora Bennett as she leads an expedition to an island that hosted Jurassic Park experiments.

It has now been confirmed that thanks to the sequel’s takings so far, namely $318million (£233million) worldwide, it puts Johansson at the top of the list of the highest-grossing lead actors of all time, with $14.8billion (£10.8billion) in box office for her films across her career in leading or ensemble roles, according to The Numbers.

That’s now ahead of fellow Marvel stars Samuel L. Jackson, Robert Downey Jr. and Chris Pratt – the latter of whom also starred in the previous Jurassic World films.

Rebirth comes from director Gareth Edwards, and also stars Mahershala Ali, Jonathan Bailey, Rupert Friend, Manuel Garcia-Rulfo and Ed Skrein.

The film has gained a mixed reception from critics since its premiere, with NME calling it a “toothless reboot” that “fails to recapture the magic” in our three-star review.

“Action and acting, then, all good,” we added. “Unfortunately – and bizarrely, given screenwriter David Koepp co-wrote the original Jurassic Park among other great blockbusters – the dialogue throughout Jurassic World Rebirth is very patchy, as if his first draft script made it to the screen.”

Meanwhile, earlier this year Johansson revealed that she requested that her name be removed from the executive producer credits on the latest Marvel film Thunderbolts*.

Speaking with fellow Black Widow star David Harbour in Interview magazine, the latter noted that her name is listed as he congratulated her, to which Johansson replied: “I asked to have my credit removed because I wasn’t involved.”
