Manchester United’s decision to sell Scott McTominay last summer has proved to be a contentious one with the Scottish international enjoying a wonderful first season with Napoli.
The midfielder played a key role in securing the Serie A title with his stunning goal in the final game of the season the crowing glory in a fine maiden campaign.
McTominay’s performances didn’t just turn him into an instant fans’ favourite in Naples but have seemingly earned him admirers from across the globe with Saudi Arabia giants Al-Hilal declaring their interest in his signature.
As reported by Alfredo Pedulla, Al-Hilal have enquired about a mega money deal to take the Scot to Saudi but have had their interest immediately rebuffed by the Italians.
Napoli have informed the Saudis that McTominay is not for sale at any price and have no intention of selling the midfielder this summer.
It’s a stance led by manager Antonio Conte who values McTominay highly and sees him as an indispensable member of his first team squad.
Maybe the interest of Al-Hilal shouldn’t come as any surprise with former Inter Milan manager Simeone Inzaghi, who would have spent last season watching McTominay first hand, now in charge.
However, there is no deal to be done in this window and the Saudi side will have to look elsewhere as they attempt to bridge the gap between themselves and last year’s Pro League winners, Al-Ittihad.
McTominay himself is also more than happy to stay in Naples and will be hoping for an even better second season after finding his feet so well in Serie A.
The Scot is just one in a long list of players who seem to have stumbled into better form after leaving Old Trafford with figureheads in Manchester still trying to find a reason behind the worrying trend.
Frustratingly for United, McTominay’s profile does fit Ruben Amorim’s style of play much more than Erik ten Hag’s, who sanctioned the sale of the 28-year-old last summer.
United have much to do after last season’s woeful campaign and will be desperate to get their business right in the upcoming market and get much more out of the current crop of first team stars next season.
