Rob Mac to star in live-action ‘Far Cry’ adaptation

Rob Mac will co-create and star in a live-action adaptation of hit video game series Far Cry.

In August, it was reported Noah Hawley (Alien: Earth, Fargo) was working on an adaptation of Far Cry alongside It’s Always Sunny… star Mac. Revealed via a leaked update from Ubisoft, the project was described as an “anthology drama” with each season “set in a new world with a different cast of characters following the video game franchise’s signature standalone storytelling format.”

“This collaboration is really an embarrassment of riches. Far Cry is a psychological tailspin that doesn’t shy away from the darkest and most absurd parts of humanity, which aligns perfectly with FX’s bold and fearless storytelling style,” explained Margaret Boykin, head of film and television content at Ubisoft.

Now the project has been officially announced though details about plot and release date are still to be confirmed.

“Getting to work alongside Noah Hawley is a dream realised,” said Mac in a statement. “Ubisoft has been remarkably generous, entrusting us with one of the most iconic video-game worlds ever created. And through it all, my FX family continues to lift me up with their constant belief and support.”

The original Far Cry was released in 2004 and has spawned a number of sequels with Far Cry 6 launching in 2021. An anthology first-person shooter, the Far Cry games don’t have a central protagonist or setting but they do typically see players working with freedom fighters to take down oppressive leaders. Some entries in the series have been very grounded while others feature sci-fi or supernatural elements.

“What I love about the Far Cry game franchise is it’s an anthology. Each game is a variation of a theme, the same way each season of Fargo is a variation on a theme,” added Hawley. “To create a big action show that can change from year to year, while always exploring the nature of humanity through this complex and chaotic lens is a dream come true. I’m excited to partner with Rob and bring our shared irreverent, ambitious sensibility to the screen.”

Back in 2023 it was rumoured a seventh Far Cry game was in development at Ubisoft alongside a multiplayer title. It was reported that both games were looking at a late 2025 release date, though Ubisoft refused to comment at the time and no official announcement has ever been made.

In other news, Hollow Knight boss Ari Gibson has already started teasing a sequel to Silksong, which was finally released earlier this year.
