“Positive signs”: United close to agreeing new deal with in-form star, fans will be buzzing – report

Manchester United are inching closer to keeping one of their leaders at the club beyond the current season.

Casemiro’s expected departure will come as a big blow, both on and off the pitch, considering the experience and winning mentality he brought to the squad.

Tom Heaton, another of the leaders in the group, could also be let go. To make matters worse, the contract of Harry Maguire was also up in the summer, with INEOS dilly-dallying over an extension.

Naturally, plenty of clubs were eyeing the soon-to-be free agent, with a few even attempting an audacious January raid.

Contract update

Michael Carrick held firm, and blocked all exits, but with the co-owners yet to agree a new deal, it seemed like the former club captain would be on his way out.

But according to Teamtalk, there has been a breakthrough in talks between the club and the defender.

INEOS wanted the Englishman to take a pay cut, and as things stand, that is likely to happen. Also, the new deal will be a short-term one, likely to be for a year, which suits INEOS.

“Sources have highlighted positive developments in talks between Maguire and Man Utd.

“Sources close to the situation, describe “positive signs” that a compromise could be reached, likely involving a wage reduction from his current £180,000 per week and a short-term extension of perhaps one additional season.

“They are the ideal terms for United, given we’ve all seen how quickly players deep into their thirties can decline.

“With Casemiro set to depart, Maguire’s experience and recent solid performances have bolstered his case to remain, earning support from the dressing room and interim manager Michael Carrick.”

Harry Maguire has been in top form for the caretaker head coach, and his teammates all want him to stay. So this will please both Carrick and the players.
