Pokémon fans are expecting some big music news next week

Pokémon has confirmed a livestream presentation for next week – and fans are expecting some music news.

In May, Nintendo confirmed that Pokémon Legends: Z-A would launch this October after first being revealed in 2024. The same day, it was confirmed a special Pokémon Presents livestream would take place in July, with many assuming more details about Legends: Z-A would be unveiled then.

However, a new teaser from Nintendo featuring Pikachu standing in front of what appears to be a set of DJ decks has fans convinced a music-based announcement is imminent. “It seems like Pikachu is preparing something…?” added the post.

“You’ve heard of Detective Pikachu, now meet his cousin: DJ PIKACHU!,” wrote one fan. “Pokémon x DJ Hero,” added another. “A rhythm game, I suppose. Depending on who’s available as characters, I can’t wait to bust a move as Scizor or Ghetsis,” said a third.

Some fans have speculated that more Pokémon soundtracks could be heading to the Nintendo Music service while others are hoping the classic music is coming to vinyl. Back in 2022, Pokémon launched an official “sound library” of music from the games, but the service is currently only available in Japan.

Others have pointed out that the teaser is mostly black and white, with some hopeful for a remixed version of 2010’s Pokémon Black & White.

The Pokémon Presents livestream will air July 22 at 1pm BST and can be viewed via the Pokémon YouTube channel here.

Next year is the 30th anniversary of Pokémon and a collaboration with Lego has already been confirmed as part of the celebrations. In a recent interview, boss Tsunekazu Ishihara revealed that he believes the franchise can remain popular for another 70 years as long as creators keep innovating. “If we become complacent and go with the flow, that’s when it will go downhill,” he explained.

The next Pokémon game is Legends: Z-A which has been described as a “new frontier” for the long-running series. “Blending an RPG story unfolding in a single city with action elements and a real-time battle system, it’s unlike anything seen before in the franchise,” reads an official description. Multiplayer battle game Champions is also in development. However there’s still no news on the next mainline entry in the series after Scarlet & Violet were released in 2022.
