Outbreak of Israel-Iran war leaves China’s Mideast diplomacy at an impasse

Beijing has said it is prepared to act as peacemaker in the escalating conflict between Israel and Iran after having successfully brokered a rapprochement between regional foes Iran and Saudi Arabia in 2023.  But the war has also highlighted the gap between China’s diplomatic ambitions in the Middle East and its rather limited options for involvement in the current conflict.
