Official: United confirm incredibly successful chief is set to jump ship to rival PL club

Manchester United have confirmed that director of academy Nick Cox has left his role after nine years of service.

Earlier this week, it emerged that Cox had accepted to become Everton’s new technical director and now, United have announced his exit.

Cox joined United in 2016 and was promoted to director of academy just three years later. He departs having left an impressive legacy in youth development and nurturing emerging talent.

Under him, 35 players made their first-team debuts. This includes Kobbie Mainoo, Alejandro Garnacho, Anthony Elanga, Ethan Wheatley, Tyler Fredricson and Harry Amass, just to name a few.

United’s Under-18s team won the treble in the 2023/24 season under his leadership.

The 47-year-old transformed United’s academy into one of the most respected in world football and now departs with it well-positioned to continue producing top-tier talent.

Cox said about his departure, “Youth development is an important part of the lifeblood of this club, having the responsibility of supporting this generation of young people and staff to ensure that the system continues to thrive has been an immense privilege.”

“Working alongside some of the most talented and dedicated youth developers in the world has been a huge honour.”

“There are countless individuals behind the scenes who play a vital role in supporting our young players to maximise their potential.”

He added, “I will be forever grateful for their support and know they will ensure that the Academy continues to go from strength to strength as the club enters an exciting new era.”

United’s director of football Jason Wilcox remarked, “Nick has made a huge contribution to Manchester United over the past nine years. I was already well aware of his qualities before I arrived at the club and have really enjoyed working together.”

“Identifying and developing the best youth talent remains one of this club’s top priorities, and we are grateful for the work Nick has done to provide such a strong foundation for us to continue to build on.”

“We wish him well for the next stage of his career.”

Cox is expected to stay on for a few more months to oversee a smooth transition and help maintain continuity during the handover.
