Nintendo Switch 2 is the best-selling console of 2025 so far

It’s been reported that the Nintendo Switch 2 is the best-selling console of 2025 in North America, with the PS5 coming in second.

According to Circana, a leading global market research company, the Nintendo Switch 2 was the “best-selling video game hardware in both units and dollars across September and the 2025 year-to-date period,” following its launch in June. It’s also responsible for a 20 per cent increase in “game hardware spending” compared to a year ago, with more than $3.2 billion being spent on consoles by North American gamers.

Circana also reported that the PS5 was the second best-selling console of 2025 so far, but there’s been a “double-digit year-on-year percentage decline” in sales of the PlayStation 5, the Xbox Series X/S and the original Switch.

As of June 2025, 5.82 million Nintendo Switch 2 consoles have been sold worldwide (via Nintendo) and Mario Kart World has been the most popular game, with 5.62million units sold. The same month it was reported that the Switch 2 had become the fastest-selling console of all time, with 3.5million units being sold in its first four days. The fastest-selling Playstation, the Ps5, took four weeks to shift the same number of consoles.

Nintendo reportedly wants to sell 15million Switch 2 consoles in its first 12 months.

These big numbers come despite initial backlash about the price of the Nintendo Switch 2, with some fans outraged that the console cost £395.99 while games such as Mario Kart World are being sold for £74.99. There’s also been controversy about the “rip-off” cost of expansions, Switch 2 upgrades and re-releases such as Mario Galaxy 1+2.

Explaining their new pricing strategy, former president Doug Bowser said: “We’ll look at each game, really look at the development that’s gone into the game, the breadth and depth of the gameplay, the durability over time and the repeatability of gameplay experiences. Those are all factors [that go into deciding] what the right price point for the game will be. You can anticipate that there will be variable pricing, and we haven’t set a benchmark.”

In other news, Switch 2 players will soon be able to play spooky GameCube classic Luigi’s Mansion via the online library that’s available to all Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack subscribers.
