Nintendo has been criticised for how much it is charging Switch 2 users for new releases and expansions for existing titles.

Last Friday (September 12), Nintendo hosted a bumper Direct presentation to celebrate the 40th anniversary of Super Mario Bros.. During the hour-long stream, it was confirmed the sequel to The Super Mario Bros. Movie would take heavy inspiration from iconic Wii 3D platformer Super Mario Galaxy.

It was also announced the game and its 2010 sequel would be coming to the Nintendo Switch.

Elsewhere in the stream, a paid expansion for Donkey Kong Bananza was announced and another was confirmed for Pokemon Legends: Z-A. Nintendo also promised that a number of Virtual Boy games were set to come to the Nintendo Online Library alongside a re-release of the physical peripheral needed to play them.

However, fans are outraged at how much Nintendo is charging for this new content.

The re-release of Super Mario Galaxy and Super Mario Galaxy 2 will each cost £33.99 while a bundle including both games is available for £58.99.

The Donkey Kong Bananza expansion gives players a new island to explore and access to the ‘Emerald Rush’ game mode, but will set you back £16.99. The Virtual Boy games will be free to play for Nintendo Switch Online subscribers but the googles needed to make them 3D will cost £66.99 while a cardboard version is £16.99.

“As a long time Nintendo fan, I’m starting to be priced out of a lot of things they are putting out and that makes me sad,” one fan wrote on Reddit.

“I think you should be angry, not sad. You aren’t being priced out because life is just like that, you’re being priced out because Nintendo is greedy as fuck, and the billions they make a year wasn’t enough for them,” replied another.” I’m one of the first to go ‘whatever, just don’t buy it’, but 40 bucks for a Wii title is daylight robbery,” wrote a third.

Earlier this year, there was backlash over the Switch 2’s new pricing model. The physical edition of Mario Kart World costs £74.99 and Donkey Kong Bananza is £66.99, while a digital-only version of the game is priced at £58.99.

Explaining the “variable pricing” President Doug Bowser said: “We’ll look at each game, really look at the development that’s gone into the game, the breadth and depth of the gameplay, if you will, the durability over time and the repeatability of gameplay experiences. Those are all factors, and there’s many more that go into consideration of what is the right price point for the game.”

Despite the complaints, the Switch 2 has become the fastest-selling home console of all time.

In other news, Nintendo has finally confirmed the highly-anticipated Metroid Prime 4: Beyond will launch this December.
