Bayern Munich was knocked out of the Club World Cup after a 2–0 loss to PSG, but the bigger blow came with Jamal Musiala suffering a fractured left fibula that could sideline him for up to five months.
Bayern Munich was eliminated from the FIFA Club World Cup after a 2–0 loss to Paris Saint-Germain, and to make matters worse, the German side suffered a devastating blow as Jamal Musiala sustained a serious injury. The young midfielder’s left fibula was fractured after his leg got trapped under Gianluigi Donnarumma’s body during a challenge. Early reports suggest he will be sidelined for four to five months.
After the match, Bayern goalkeeper Manuel Neuer sparked controversy with strong comments in the mixed zone, blaming Donnarumma for the severity of the incident. The German captain criticized the Italian’s decision to charge for the ball despite defender Willian Pacho already covering the play.
“In my opinion, you don’t go into that situation. It’s reckless—he shouldn’t have done it. He was willing to risk his opponent getting injured,” Neuer said.
Neuer accuses Donnarumma of lacking empathy
Neuer went further, accusing Donnarumma of showing a lack of empathy. The veteran keeper revealed he confronted the PSG player on the field:
“I asked him, ‘Don’t you want to go check on him? He’s lying there, he’ll probably go to the hospital. I think it’s respectful to go see him, wish him well, and apologize.’
Eventually, he went over to Jamal—but I would have reacted differently,” Neuer added with visible frustration.
Donnarumma’s apology to Musiala
According to outlets such as Bild and RMC Sport, Donnarumma went to Bayern’s locker room after the game to apologize, but by then, Musiala had already been taken for medical evaluation. The PSG keeper later sent a direct message to the injured player to express his regret over the incident that overshadowed PSG’s qualification to the semifinals.
Donnarumma also addressed the situation on Instagram, posting a photo of himself looking distraught and writing: “All my thoughts and best wishes are with you.”
The incident has not only stirred tension between the two clubs but also raised concerns about player safety and goalkeeper decision-making in high-stakes matches.
