Mystery surrounds United’s plans for African internationals despite new FIFA ruling – report

Manchester United face major squad disruption as the Africa Cup of Nations approaches.

What is it?

The Africa Cup of Nations takes place every two years, with 24 nations participating to determine the best team on the continent.

This year’s edition will kick off on Sunday 21st December, when the hosts Morocco take on Comoros.

The tournament will end on Sunday 18th January.

How does this affect United?

The Red Devils will have three key players absent during this period.

Bryan Mbeumo, Amad and Noussair Mazraoui will all be on international duty with their respective nations, which will be a big blow to United’s right-hand side of the pitch.

It had been stated that United might need to release players by 8th December, but a recent FIFA ruling stated that they could retain their African stars until 15th December.

This means that the three key players could be available to face AFC Bournemouth at Old Trafford on Monday, 15th.

Confusion

Nonetheless, there is still confusion about what will happen with United’s players, in spite of the recent ruling.

The club’s official website carries comments from Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim on the situation, and he is still uncertain who will and will not be available for him.

When asked if he knew when his players would depart for Morocco, he retorted, “no, with everything. They are going to play the next game [at Molineux] and that is the only thing I care [about].”

In spite of Amorim’s words, it seems unlikely United would let three important players leave before they have to, especially in the context that the Red Devils will be keen to return to winning ways after another disappointing display versus West Ham United on Thursday night.
