Mötley Crüe‘s Vince Neil has revealed that he suffered from a stroke in December.
In March, the band postponed their 11-show run at the Dolby Live at Las Vegas’s Park MGM, which was supposed to kick off on March 28 and run until April 19, but instead began last night (September 12) and will now run until October 3. They also cancelled a further festival slot which had been scheduled for May.
Now, Neil has revealed that the reason for the delay was that he suffered from a stroke and had to learn how to walk again.
In an interview with the Las Vegas Review-Journal, the frontman shared that the health scare happened over Christmas last year: “I had a stroke. My whole left side went out,” he said. “I had to learn to walk again, and that was tough. The doctors said they didn’t think I’d be able to go back on stage again. I go, ‘No, no, I’m gonna do it. Watch and see.’”
At the time of announcing the postponement, Neil said that the shows would be held later while he recovered from a vocal procedure. “My health is my top priority so I can bring you the awesome shows you deserve, and I can’t wait to return to the stage,” he said in a statement. However, the health issue was much more serious.
Neil went on to explain that he did physical therapy for months in Nashville, and had to recover his mobility, which had been severely impacted by the stroke. “I went from people carrying me to the bathroom, because I couldn’t walk myself, finally to a wheelchair,” he explained. “I graduated to a walker, and then I had a cane. Now I don’t need anything. But it’s like a full-time job getting back to where you feel good again.”
He added that, while his voice wasn’t affected, “It takes a while to get your brain to start moving your legs, for them to do what your brain wants to do. You try to walk but it doesn’t come out right,” he explained, adding that he’s around 95 percent back to “where I was before.”
Mötley Crüe‘s Nikki Sixx recently revealed why they didn’t play Black Sabbath’s ‘Back to the Beginning‘ farewell gig, citing “health issues within the band”.
Back in February, the band issued a statement following Neil’s private jet being involved in a fatal crash. Neil was not on the plane at the time of the crash, but his girlfriend Rain Andreani and her friend suffered injuries, though not thought to be life-threatening.
They were both taken to hospital with the plane’s co-pilot, who was also injured. The pilot of the aircraft died in the crash.
Neil’s representative Worrick Robinson shared a statement about the collision on Mötley Crüe’s official social media channels: “For reasons unknown at this time, the plane veered from the runway causing it to collide with another parked plane.
