Milan provides five-word update on Christian Pulisic’s future: Is the USMNT star close to contract extension?

Is a contract extension imminent, or are there lingering uncertainties behind the scenes?

As the summer transfer window begins to stir with new appointments and strategic planning at Milan, one of the club’s brightest stars, Christian Pulisic, finds himself at the center of speculation. The American international’s future in red and black has prompted curiosity — especially after a five-word update from the club’s new sporting director. Is a contract extension imminent, or are there lingering uncertainties behind the scenes?

Igli Tare, Milan’s newly appointed sporting director, addressed several burning topics as he outlined the Rossoneri’s ambitions for the coming season under returning manager Massimiliano Allegri. While Yunus Musah appears to be on his way out, Tare was unequivocal when it came to Pulisic’s role in the project.

In a statement to Italian media, Tare shared: “Pulisic will be a key player for the next Milan season. I’ll have the chance to discuss the renewal topic with [CEO] Giorgio [Furlani] at the right time. Christian has a central role in this group.”

These remarks, subtle yet impactful, offered a glimpse into the club’s long-term plan — even though no official contract extension has been signed yet.

Pulisic’s best season yet

Pulisic delivered his finest campaign to date in 2024–25, becoming Milan’s top scorer with 17 goals and 12 assists across 50 appearances in all competitions. Despite his heroics, the club failed to secure European qualification, ending the season outside the top six. Still, his individual brilliance was undeniable.

“I think he was one of the most positive players last season, and he is one of the pillars of the season to come,” Tare added, reinforcing the view that the 26-year-old will remain central to Allegri’s tactical plans.

What’s the status of his contract?

Although Pulisic still has two years left on his current deal, which runs until June 2027 with an option to extend until 2028, talks about a long-term renewal have already taken place. According to Gazzetta dello Sport, discussions between the player’s camp and the club are at an advanced stage, with a potential extension until 2029 being considered.

However, the USMNT star and his representatives reportedly asked for time before signing, possibly to assess the club’s direction under its new leadership. After back-to-back standout seasons, it’s clear that the American wants to ensure that Milan maintains the ambition necessary to compete on the biggest stages, especially as he eyes a pivotal role in the 2026 World Cup on home soil.
