Marc Skinner outlines genius tactical tweak behind United’s stunning 4-1 comeback win over Everton

Manchester United head coach Marc Skinner has explained his brilliant use of Jess Park, which massively helped the club seal a sensational 4-1 comeback victory over Everton.

United beat Everton

United came from behind to spoil Everton’s first Women’s Super League match at the Hill Dickinson Stadium, cruising to a 4-1 win on Sunday.

Honoka Hayashi gave Everton the lead in the 16th minute. United dominated for large parts of the proceedings but were forced to wait until the 62nd minute to restore parity.

Melvine Malard converted the rebound after the first shot at goal was saved by goalkeeper Emily Ramsey.

Hikaru Kitagawa’s unexpected own goal handed United the lead for the first time, before substitute Jess Park struck twice to seal the win and secure all three points.

Sunday’s result means United maintain their unbeaten start to the campaign, occupying third place, two points off Chelsea and a point behind Manchester City.

After the final whistle, a delighted Skinner credited his strategic deployment of Park for tipping the game in United’s favour.

Skinner explains Park decision

Skinner said [as quoted by club media], “We knew that Everton would have a gameplan to try and stop Jess today, because they’ve prepared a week for it.”

“So then we rotated by playing a winger system rather than an inside ’10’ system. Second half, [when Park comes on], they have to adapt again.”

“It’s keeping people guessing that we’re not just a one-trick pony, we have different ways to hurt you.”

Skinner added about his squad, “They’re big time players now.”

“It’s another stadium. They play like it’s just another pitch in another surrounding. I think that’s healthy. I really do think that’s healthy, because it doesn’t distract from your job then.”

“We’re going to need that if we want to go on progressing in the Champions League. I think [playing at] Wembley helped through that, you know, playing at the Emirates and Old Trafford and all of those places.”

“I think we probably actually had a little bit more of an advantage, because Everton don’t usually play here, whereas it’s another stadium for us to visit and try and win.”

Skinner also praised United’s passionate travelling fans, describing them as incredible and crediting their support for driving the team on in a hostile environment.
