Lykke Li has announced her sixth LP, The Afterparty, due out on May 8 via Neon Gold/Futures. Introducing it at a Los Angeles listening party last month, she said that it’s “maybe my final” album, and it was recorded with a string orchestra, flute, and “apocalyptic bongos.” In a press statement, she says, “I was twirling around in love addiction for all those albums. Now I’m going into my existential era,” adding, “I find that we’re in an era where everyone is talking about, ‘My higher self’, Fuck that. This is an album dealing with your lower self: your need for revenge, your shame, despair, all of it.”
The first single is “Lucky Again,” which includes a Max Richter Four Seasons sample, beginning with a majestic sweep of strings and sidling into disco-tinged synth pop. “To me it’s samsara in a song,” Li says. “The wheel of life; winning, losing, living, dying. Having had something and praying you’ll have it again. Whether it’s sex, money, vitality, love. I always said I wanted the Vivaldi song at my wedding or funeral but I think this is giving more revenge heist energy.” Watch the video below.
Li has a few shows coming up, including both weekends of Coachella and shows with Robyn and Wolf Alice. See all dates below.
