Led by singer-songwriter Sophie Harris, London band Modern Woman have been around since the start of the decade, and have been notable in that UK festival End of the Road launched their own record label with the band’s 2021 debut single. They haven’t released much since, but they’ve just announced their debut album, titled Johnny’s Dreamworld, which will be out May 1 via One Little Independent.
“A vital theme I’ve always wanted in Modern Woman is the idea of conflicting things, of the tender/harsh, loud/quiet and scrappy/polished,” Sophie says of the album, which they made with producer Joel Burton (Naima Bock, Katy J Pearson). “The style of everybody’s playing, drawing from a melting pot of influences, coming together to form something new.”
Harris’ very expressive voice and flowery lyrical style are at the heart of Modern Woman, whose music is just as evocative, as you can hear on the album’s first single, “Dashboard Mary,” which opens with fluttering flutes and ends with a barrage of bashed guitars.
“This is a song that I wanted to write like a film,” Harris says. “I wanted to confront the feeling of the ‘morning after’ and the decisions made during that time of exhilaration the night before.” You can watch the video for “Dashboard Mary” below.
