28 Years Later, Danny Boyle and Alex Garland‘s long-awaited return to the groundbreaking zombie movie series they started in 2002, is in theatres today. Adding to the creepiness is the unsettling soundtrack by UK group and regular Massive Attack collaborators Young Fathers, which features new songs alongside the instrumental score.
“The genre-defying, intuitive sound of Young Fathers is uniquely suited to the world of 28 Years Later,” says Boyle. “They have crafted a musical landscape that brings an intense, primal energy to the visuals but also heart and humanity to a world that is at once horrific and strangely beautiful.” Listen to the soundtrack below.
As for the film itself, it stars Jodie Comer, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Jack O’Connell, Alfie Williams and Ralph Fiennes and here’s the official synopsis: “It’s been almost three decades since the rage virus escaped a biological weapons laboratory, and now, still in a ruthlessly enforced quarantine, some have found ways to exist amidst the infected. One such group of survivors lives on a small island connected to the mainland by a single, heavily defended causeway. When one of the group leaves the island on a mission into the dark heart of the mainland, he discovers secrets, wonders, and horrors that have mutated not only the infected but other survivors as well.” Watch the trailer below.
A sequel to 28 Years Later, written by Garland and directed by Nia DaCosta, was shot at the same time and will be out January 16, 2025.
