British garage rocker Thee Headcoatees — Ludella Black, Kyra LaRubia, Bongo Debbie and Holly Golightly — existed for most of the ’90s, first as a backing band for Billy Childish’s Thee Headcoats before spinning off into their own awesome group and disbanding before the dawn of the millenium.
Childish got Thee Headcoats back together in 2022 somewhat by accident: spinoff group Headcoats Sect reformed to make an EP to pay tribute to bandmate Don Craine (also of ’60s group Downliners Sect), and with a few hours of leftover studio time, Thee Headcoats banged out a new album, Irregularis (The Great Hiatus), which was released in 2023. They then made another new album, yet to be released, and while at it a new Thee Headcoatees album — their first since 1999 — was made as well.
Man-Trap is just as raw and fierce as Thee Headcoatees’ ’90s albums, opening with a cover of Ramones’ “The KKK Took My Baby Away,” and from there includes a mix of originals, covers (Rolling Stones, Dead Moon, Fang, more) and new songs. Billy Childish produced, it rips, and you can listen (h/t Stereogum) below.
Now we need a tour.
