Public Enemy have shared a new protest song against gun violence and “crooked politicians who ain’t playing fair” – check it out below.
The veteran hip-hop group’s new track ‘March Madness’ opens with what appears to be a 911 dispatch call being played on the news.
Flavor Flav then sets the tone with a militaristic chant of “Right, Left, Left, Right, Left!” before calling out politicians who “don’t care” and won’t be “getting my vote.”
Later, Chuck D, spits: “Kids supposed to have fun, none of this run for cover for your life, son / Grades 1 to 12, even kindergarden, needs security,” before adding: “Parents dropping off their children in fear / Lawmakers acting scared of the NRA refusing to change year after year.”
All proceeds from the track are being donated to The Black Music Action Coalition human rights fund and Everytown, a non-profit organisation against gun violence.
Flavor Flav said of the track in a statement (via Consequence): “It’s horrible what’s going on right now around the world and especially here. I hate it. But I got a voice and a platform and we are still fighting the power and for positive change all these years later.”
Chuck D added: “Gun violence is not normal behaviour, but it’s been going on for so long that it’s normalised. We need to treat it like the sickness and the epidemic that it is.”
It comes after the band used their set at RiverBeat Music Festival in Memphis last month to call for a “free Palestine”.
Elsewhere, the group recently announced a “once in a lifetime” concert at London’s Royal Albert Hall on June 27, the first UK show in nearly a decade. “We are honoured to have this opportunity to stand on the Royal Albert Hall stage and perform under the same renowned roof that the greats from Hendrix to Pavarotti, from The Beatles to my brothers Cypress Hill have,” Chuck D previously said. “Thank you, London. We’ll see you soon.” Find any remaining tickets here.
They will also be playing at the 2025 edition of Sea.Hear.Now alongside Blink-182, Hozier and LCD Soundsystem as well as at the Shaky Knees Festival in Atlanta in September along with My Chemical Romance, Vampire Weekend and Deftones. Visit here for international tickets.
