‘Life Is Strange’ OG writer hits out at plans for live-action adaptation

Life is Strange

The writer of Life Is Strange and its beloved sequel has hit out at plans for a live-action adaptation.

Over the weekend it was announced that Amazon Prime Video had green-lit a Life Is Strange adaptation. The series will be written by Charlie Covell (Kaos, The End Of The F******g World), who will also serve as executive producer and showrunner.  Square Enix, who owns the Life Is Strange IP, will produce the adaptation alongside Margot Robbie’s production company Lucky Chap and Story Kitchen, a company that “specialises in franchise farming”.

However there was no mention of Life Is Strange’s original creators Don’tNod, despite the adaptation focusing on the original game’s protagonists Max and Chloe.

Responding to the news on X, original writer Christian Divine said: “The only people not involved are the creators.”

“This is tragic, Christian. And far too old a tale in this town! I’m so sorry,” replied one fan, with Divine then sharing the closing scene from the classic 1974 film Chinatown.

“Seeing the game created by Michel Koch, Roal Barbet, Jean-Luc Cano and our Don’tNod team becoming a show is an incredible honour,” added Don’tNod studio executive producer Luc Baghadoust, celebrating the team behind the original game.

“This is really important to me. I really enjoy Charlie Covell as a writer but anything to do with Life Is Strange needs to have the original team at Dontnod involved tbh,” wrote one fan. “I do think, with all due respect, that the original creators should be Story Consultants. As a maker we have to be careful and to treat also with respect the persons that wrote the original ideas. A mutual relationship is always helpful to world building and moreover directing the actors,” said another.

In a statement, Story Kitchen wrote: “We have always believed that Life Is Strange deserved to be more than just a game—it’s a cultural touchstone. After a decade-long journey, we’re honoured to be bringing this beloved story to Amazon MGM alongside our incredible partners at Square Enix, our brilliant showrunner/writer Charlie Covell, and the amazing team at LuckyChap. Together, this thoughtfully assembled dream team is ready to share Life Is Strange with the world in an entirely new way!”

There is currently no news about cast or plot but many fans want Wednesday’s Emma Myers to star as Max in the adaptation.

In other news, Keanu Reeves has said he’d love to return as Johnny Silverhand for the Cyberpunk 2077 sequel.
