Liam Gallagher responds to death of Ricky Hatton, as boxing legend seen singing Oasis at a bar just days before

Liam Gallagher has reacted to the death of his friend and British boxing legend Ricky Hatton – see what the Oasis star had to say below.

Hatton’s death was announced on Sunday (September 14). He was 46 – while a cause of death has not yet been shared, authorities are reportedly not treating it as a suspicious case.

Following the news of Hatton’s tragic passing, Oasis frontman Liam Gallagher took to social media to pay homage: “Absolutely devastated to hear the news about RICKY HATTON, it was an absolute honour to know him and carry his belts RIP CHAMP LIVE FOREVER”.

In what was his final public appearance sometime in August, Hatton was seen at a bar in Costa Adeje, Tenerife. Midway through the bar’s live band’s performance, their guitarist signalled for a man in the audience to join them onstage for cover rendition of Oasis’ ‘Wonderwall’.

That man was Ricky Hatton. One clip of the bar jam has since made its way onto social media – you can check it out below.

Hatton – arguably Britain’s most renowned boxer and a former light-welterweight and welterweight world champion – retired in 2012, with a record of 45 wins over 48 bouts. Among his top opponents were other boxing greats like Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao.

He was an avid fan of Oasis, once saying (per the Daily Mail): “Ever since I was a kid, I wanted to be a boxing world champion, support Man City and listen to Oasis. But I became a four-time world champion in two weight classes, ended up boxing at the Etihad Stadium in front of 55,000 people, and became mates with Noel and Liam Gallagher over the years.”

Indeed, Hatton struck up a friendship with Oasis and the Gallagher brothers. A year before their 2009 break-up, Liam and Noel famously walked Hatton to the ring in Las Vegas for his bout against Paulie Malignaggi, and were even allowed to carry his championship belts to the ring.

Back in July, Ricky Hatton attended Oasis’ first reunion show in Cardiff, and later shared a picture on Instagram of himself and Noel Gallagher with a couple of their friends at Heaton Park. He also travelled out to Dublin and Manchester for the band’s reunion shows there.

Ahead of those mammoth reunion shows, Hatton spoke to Vegas Insider about Oasis’ reunion: “I didn’t think they were going to get back together. Noel has said himself, when the fallouts happen then it’s over. Thankfully, he’s swallowed his pride, and they’ve got back together, and I’m made up. I’m excited to see them perform all of the old songs, and if they can get together and make new songs, how good is that?”

In July, Hatton announced his return to boxing, and had his sights set on a bout against Eisa Al Dah in Dubai in December. In August, he spoke of his Oasis-like comeback to SunSport: “It inspired a lot of people, you know, for me to get in shape again at the age I’m at. Especially bearing in mind all my problems I’ve had personally with mental health and stuff like that.”

Other icons in boxing have since paid tribute to the late Ricky Hatton. Former foe Manny Pacquiao wrote: “He was not only a great fighter inside the ring but also a brave and kind man in life.”

David Beckham wrote: “Ricky was one of a kind. Just heartbreaking…”
