League rivals aim to derail United’s brilliant plan to land perfect replacement for Ten Hag flop on a free – report

Mike Maignan is fast becoming a hot commodity in next year’s transfer market.

During the summer transfer window, he was heavily linked with a move away from AC Milan.

Near exit

Manchester United were among the interested clubs, while Chelsea pushed hardest to land the Frenchman.

Despite their efforts, the Blues failed to reach an agreement with Milan, and with Maignan not pushing for a move away, the deal fell through.

The goalkeeper remained at San Siro, with reports suggesting new head coach Massimiliano Allegri played a key role in the decision.

Allegri settled on him as his captain, and there was even talk of a contract extension, with his current deal set to expire next summer.

However, negotiations over a new deal for the 30-year-old have borne no fruit. In fact, TBR claim the keeper has now backed away from extension talks, putting his suitors on high alert.

Chelsea still want Maignan

Chelsea, who failed to sign him in the summer, are, according to TBR, “confident about securing his signature” as they continue their search for a top-class goalkeeper.

According to the UK publication, the mood at Stamford Bridge is that, “Maignan could now well be heading for Stamford Bridge next summer, and the Blues could even land the Milan goalkeeper on a free transfer.”

United very keen on Maignan

According to a report relayed by The Peoples Person, United are also still keen on the Milan number one.

INEOS are eager to offload André Onana next summer, ideally after a successful loan spell at Trabzonspor in the Turkish Super Lig, and hope to replace him with Maignan.

The Red Devils reportedly view the prospect of signing the French international on a free as a “very attractive” transfer proposition.

With United’s deadline day arrival, Senne Lammens lacking top-level experience, Maignan’s pedigree across Europe is exactly the kind of influence Ruben Amorim might want to inject into his squad.

Chelsea or United

It will be fascinating to see who wins the race for Maignan, with reports suggesting he views the Premier League as “an ideal setting for his next step.”
