Kristen Bell cancelled an appearance on a talk show, following backlash to an anniversary post she made that many felt was in poor taste.

Known for the shows The Good Place and Veronica Mars, she has been married to fellow actor Dax Shepard since 2013, having first begun their relationship in 2007. An Instagram post marking their anniversary last Friday (October 17) drew negative attention.

The Frozen star posted a picture of the couple embracing, with the caption: “Happy 12th wedding anniversary to the man who once said to me: ‘I would never kill you. A lot of men have killed their wives at a certain point. Even though I’m heavily incentivized to kill you, I never would.’”

The post made headlines for the unusual dedication, with some comments calling her “tone-deaf” for making light of domestic violence. “Crazy thing to joke about honestly” one wrote, with another adding: “Kristen there’s no way you posted this during Domestic Violence Awareness month.”

Comments were restricted on the post, and cancelled a scheduled appearance on Wednesday’s (October 22) edition of The Today Show to promote her Netflix hit Nobody Wants This. Co-star Justine Lupe would appear solo instead.

The second season of the romantic drama was released today (October 23), and continued the story of a sex and dating podcaster (Kristen Bell) who falls in love with a rabbi, played by Adam Brody. The first season was a bit hit for the streamer, and made NME’s best TV shows of 2024 list.

Making Number 16, we said: “It’s the lemon cheesecake of romcoms – slightly tart to the taste but with just the right amount of sweet.”

Last October, the show’s creator denied accusations that the comedy depicted Jewish women negatively, saying: “I really wanted to shed a positive light on Jewish culture.”
