After sharing it on Soundcloud in May, Kneecap have officially released their new single “The Recap,” which was produced by drum-n-bass artist Mozey. In it, they address those who wish to silence them, arrest them, and have them banned from the stage, including Conservative party leader Kemi Badenoch. The song, which opens with a sampled news clip, is in Irish, but Scottish newspaper The National got a native Irish Gaelic speaker to translate the lyrics which include:
You backing up Badenoch
Cry into your sherry
Had enough Badenoch
You thought it’s momentary
Called your bluff Badenoch
Belfast will you say
Fuck Badenoch
“The Recap” is out just ahead of Kneecap’s appearance at the 2025 Glastonbury Festival on Saturday. There have been calls for their set to be canceled and for the BBC to censor their livestream of their performance. British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, in an interview with tabloid The Sun, was asked if they should perform. “No, I don’t, and I think we need to come down really clearly on this,” Starmer said. “This is about the threats that shouldn’t be made, I won’t say too much because there’s a court case on, but I don’t think that’s appropriate.”
Meanwhile, Kneecap’s Mo Chara (Liam Óg Ó hAnnaidh) appeared in court in London last week after being charged with a terror offence, regarding Chara allegedly displaying a flag in support of Hezbollah at a gig in London in November. Hundreds of fans, many in “Free Mo Chara” shirts and with signs saying the same, came to support outside the courthouse.
Last week Kneecap also posted billboards around London that read “More Blacks, More Dogs, More Irish, Mo Chara,” a riff on the infamous signs some landlords in England used to post outside their buildings in the 1950s and 1960s : “No Blacks, No Dogs, No Irish.”
Kneecap’s fall North American tour includes two sold-out shows at NYC’s Rooftop at Pier 17 on October 1 and October 10.
