“Just another employee”: United target’s family break silence on dramatic failed summer move

Manchester United faced a huge decision on deadline day.

Senne Lammens versus Emiliano Martinez

Goalkeeper has been a problem issue for the Red Devils for a long time and this was only intensified after Altay Bayindir and Andre Onana’s error-strewn starts to the season.

The Red Devils had been linked with a move for World Cup winning goalkeeper, Martinez, all summer and had a loan offer rejected in July.

The club entered the deadline day madness having agreed personal terms with both the Argentina international and Belgian keeper Senne Lammens.

Ultimately, United decided to push forward with a move for Lammens and Martinez failed to secure a dream move to Old Trafford.

Family speak out

Martinez’s national team coach, Lionel Scaloni, has confirmed that Martinez was hurt that he could not sign for United as he was excited to play for the Red Devils.

The keeper’s brother has also had his say on the matter.

In an interview with DSports Radio Emiliano’s brother Alejandro claimed, “I was told that Emi gave a lot as a professional and as a person, they love him, and you could see that on the pitch.”

Speaking on his current situation at Aston Villa he stated, “he is well-liked, and the directors didn’t want to sell him because he is the key player in the team, and another team wanted him. It was a commercial dispute.”

He also denied that his brother had any issues with Villa’s boss Unai Emery and claimed, “Emi never had an argument with Unai. It was all within the management’s control, and the clubs couldn’t agree.”

Alejandro also stated that his brother has legendary status at Villa and that the fans love him. He added, “at Aston Villa, he’s the Diego [Maradona] of Napoli. He gave a lot at Villa, like Kun [Aguero] did at [Manchester] City, like Leo [Messi] did at Barca. They’re legendary players, and it’s going to be hard to surpass what he did at Aston Villa.”

What’s more, his father Alberto spoke of the coldness of the football world, describing it as any other business or factory. He elaborated, “he’s just another employee, and the factory won’t let him go if he’s good. It’s all business. Tomorrow it will happen, today it didn’t happen.”
