John Travolta resprises Danny Zuko role for ‘Grease’ sing-a-long at Hollywood Bowl

John Travolta delighted fans at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles by turning up to a sing-along screening of Grease, dressed as his character Danny Zuko.

The 1978 musical comedy remains one of the actor’s most celebrated films, where he played a high school student whose holiday love, Sandy (Olivia Newton-John), joins his school unexpectedly. The film is an enduring classic, with many re-releases and special screenings happening annually around the world.

On Friday night (June 27) Travolta posted a picture of himself dressed as Danny on his Instagram account, writing: “Tonight at the Hollywood Bowl, for the first time I surprised everyone at the GREASE Sing-A-Long and dressed up as Danny Zuko.

“No one knew. Not even the cast. Thank you for a great evening”.

In the accompanying video, he’s seen joining fellow cast members on stage, with the surprised crowd screaming and cheering. He then quoted a line from the film when he joked: “L.A! I thought you were going back to Australia? That’s cool, that’s cool, baby. You know, rocking and rolling and whatnot.”

He then counted in his fellow cast members to sing with the crowd, “a-womp-bop-a-looma a-womp-bam-boom”, before ending his introduction by saying: “Enjoy the show. We love you!”

It’s not the first time Travolta has referenced the film, as he and his daughter Ella recreated the iconic ‘Hand Jive’ scene for a Super Bowl commercial in 2021.

Olivia Newton-John passed away from cancer in 2022, aged 73, with Travolta delivering an emotional tribute to her at the 2023 Oscars. Her performance as Sandy in the film continues to influence modern culture, with Sabrina Carpenter dressing as the character and singing the song ‘Hopelessly Devoted To You’ last Halloween.

Recently, Secret Cinema announced a new version of their event Grease: The Immersive Movie Musical, which runs from August 1 to September 7.
