James Gunn Says Man of Tomorrow Is “As Much a Lex Movie as It Is a Superman Movie”

BREAKING: James Gunn is opening up about Man of Tomorrow—and it’s not the Superman movie you thought it was.

In a new interview, Gunn revealed that the upcoming film is just as much about Lex Luthor as it is about the Man of Steel himself.

“It’s a story about Lex Luthor and Superman having to work together to a certain degree against a much, much bigger threat. It’s more complicated than that but that’s a big part of it,” Gunn confirms. “It’s as much a Lex movie as it is a Superman movie. I loved working with Nicholas Hoult. I relate to the character of Lex, sadly. I really wanted to create something extraordinary with the two of them. I just love the script so much.” — via Howard Stern’s SiriusXM radio

This isn’t your standard Superman outing. Gunn is crafting a two-hander where David Corenswet’s Clark Kent collides with Nicholas Hoult’s Lex Luthor in a story that forces them into an uneasy alliance. The tension, the mistrust, and the looming “much, much bigger threat” promise a narrative that’s equal parts superhero spectacle and psychological drama.

For Gunn, it’s personal. The filmmaker admits he “relates” to Lex—a surprising confession that’s already sparking debate among fans about how layered and empathetic Hoult’s portrayal could be.

If Superman: Legacy laid the foundation for hope in the DCU, Man of Tomorrow looks ready to test it under impossible pressure. It’s not just about Superman saving the world—it’s about what happens when his greatest rival might be the only one who can help him do it.

The biggest takeaway? This isn’t simply a Superman movie. It’s the Superman–Lex story we’ve never truly seen on screen—one that could redefine the DCU and set the tone for everything that comes next.

The stage is set. The threat is bigger. The partnership is impossible. And Gunn promises something “extraordinary.”

Are you ready for the most complicated rivalry in comics to explode on the big screen?
